DX vs Flooded Evaporation in Plate Heat Exchangers

DX vs Flooded Evaporation in Plate Heat Exchangers

— Technical Comparison for Refrigeration and Chiller Systems

Plate heat exchangers (PHEs) are increasingly used as evaporators in HVAC and refrigeration systems due to their compact size and high efficiency. Within PHEs, two evaporating strategies are most common:

  • DX (Direct Expansion) Evaporation

  • Flooded Evaporation

Though both operate within a plate-type geometry, they differ significantly in distribution, efficiency, refrigerant charge, and control complexity.
